The ten avatars of Vishnu

Whenever goodness fades and wrongdoing rises, the Divine takes a form suited to the need of the hour. Tradition remembers ten such descents of Vishnu, the Dashavatara: from a small fish in the flood to a rider who will renew the age. Each one carries a lesson for our own lives.
जब-जब अच्छाई मंद पड़ती है और अधर्म बढ़ता है, ईश्वर उस समय की ज़रूरत के अनुसार रूप धारण करते हैं। परंपरा विष्णु के ऐसे दस अवतारों को याद करती है — दशावतार: प्रलय की एक छोटी मछली से लेकर युग को नया करने वाले घुड़सवार तक। हर अवतार हमारे अपने जीवन के लिए एक सीख लेकर आता है।

यदा यदा हि धर्मस्य ग्लानिर्भवति भारत । अभ्युत्थानमधर्मस्य तदाऽऽत्मानं सृजाम्यहम् ॥
yadā yadā hi dharmasya glānirbhavati bhārata abhyutthānamadharmasya tadā’’tmānaṃ sṛjāmyaham
Whenever dharma declines, O Arjuna, and adharma rises, then I manifest Myself.
हे भारत, जब-जब धर्म की हानि और अधर्म की वृद्धि होती है, तब-तब मैं स्वयं को प्रकट करता हूँ।
परित्राणाय साधूनां विनाशाय च दुष्कृताम् । धर्मसंस्थापनार्थाय संभवामि युगे युगे ॥
paritrāṇāya sādhūnāṃ vināśāya ca duṣkṛtām dharmasaṃsthāpanārthāya saṃbhavāmi yuge yuge
To protect the good, to destroy evil, and to establish dharma, I come into being in every age.
सज्जनों की रक्षा, दुष्टों के विनाश और धर्म की स्थापना के लिए मैं युग-युग में प्रकट होता हूँ।

In the scriptures · शास्त्रों में
एते चांशकलाः पुंसः कृष्णस्तु भगवान् स्वयम् । इन्द्रारिव्याकुलं लोकं मृडयन्ति युगे युगे ॥
ete cāṃśakalāḥ puṃsaḥ kṛṣṇastu bhagavān svayam indrārivyākulaṃ lokaṃ mṛḍayanti yuge yuge
All these are portions, or portions of portions, of the Supreme Person; but Krishna is the Lord Himself. Age after age they bring relief to a world troubled by the enemies of the good.
ये सब परम पुरुष के अंश या अंशों के भी अंश हैं, पर कृष्ण स्वयं भगवान हैं। युग-युग में ये अच्छाई के शत्रुओं से व्याकुल संसार को सुख देते हैं।
वेदानुद्धरते जगन्निवहते भूगोलमुद्बिभ्रते दैत्यं दारयते बलिं छलयते क्षत्रक्षयं कुर्वते । पौलस्त्यं जयते हलं कलयते कारुण्यमातन्वते म्लेच्छान्मूर्च्छयते दशाकृतिकृते कृष्णाय तुभ्यं नमः ॥
vedānuddharate jagannivahate bhūgolamudbibhrate daityaṃ dārayate baliṃ chalayate kṣatrakṣayaṃ kurvate paulastyaṃ jayate halaṃ kalayate kāruṇyamātanvate mlecchānmūrcchayate daśākṛtikṛte kṛṣṇāya tubhyaṃ namaḥ
To you who lift up the Vedas, carry the world, raise the globe of the Earth, tear apart the demon, outwit Bali, end the tyranny of warriors, conquer Ravana, wield the plough, spread compassion and strike down the lawless: to you, Krishna, who take these ten forms, I bow.
जो वेदों का उद्धार करते हैं, जगत को धारण करते हैं, पृथ्वी को उठाते हैं, दैत्य को चीरते हैं, बलि को छलते हैं, क्षत्रियों का संहार करते हैं, रावण को जीतते हैं, हल धारण करते हैं, करुणा फैलाते हैं और अधर्मियों को मूर्च्छित करते हैं — दस रूप धारण करने वाले उन कृष्ण, आपको नमस्कार।
Jayadeva’s own list names Balarama with the plough and the Buddha with compassion, and honours Krishna as the source of all ten. जयदेव की सूची में हल वाले बलराम और करुणा वाले बुद्ध दोनों हैं, और कृष्ण को दसों अवतारों का स्रोत माना गया है।
